At the heart of the design is a respect for the home’s original bones—rather than demolish and start anew, the bungalow’s heritage was retained.

On Sydney’s leafy North Shore, Grove House by Cadence & Co is a study in thoughtful transformation. Originally a modest 1920s Californian bungalow, the home has been reimagined for modern family life—not through reinvention, but by deepening its connection to place, heritage, and the rituals of home.

Designed and built by Cadence & Co, the project takes a quietly confident approach to contemporary living. Rather than erase its past, Grove House is anchored in it—a design narrative that prioritises continuity over contrast. From the street, the bungalow’s original character is lovingly preserved. Step inside, and the story unfolds: soft arches lead into a dramatic new pavilion, where a soaring cathedral ceiling frames a generous living and dining space infused with natural light.

This central volume forms the beating heart of the home—a place where the family of five reconnects daily. Framed by large-scale openings, the space extends into a central courtyard and garden, dissolving the threshold between inside and out.

Cadence & Co’s restraint is evident in the palette and detailing. Materials such as warm timber, rendered walls, and natural stone are layered with intention, offering a sense of calm and cohesion. Curved forms repeat throughout—arched thresholds and a sweeping ribbon staircase gently guide movement through the space.

Upstairs, beneath the roofline, a private zone has been created for the family’s teenage sons. This upper level shifts in tone, offering a cocooned retreat that remains linked to the rest of the house, yet allows for quiet independence.

The home’s garden, by Adam Robinson Design, plays an equally vital role in the project. A lush, linear spine, it anchors the building’s layout, offering a tranquil buffer from the suburban density beyond. The landscaping provides both privacy and a visual softness that extends the interior’s warmth into the outdoors. A pool and terrace are seamlessly integrated, designed not as afterthoughts but as essential elements in the family’s daily rhythm.

At every turn, Grove House reflects a design ethos rooted in clarity and connection. By honouring the past while embracing the present, Cadence & Co have created a timeless, soul-filled home that supports family life in all its quiet moments and joyful gatherings.
