Palm Beach House by Two Julius takes its cues from the warmth and playfulness of 1970s coastal design, with cork, brick, tile and a kidney-shaped pool shaping the renovation.
On the Gold Coast, an original 1970s beach house has been renovated with a focus on retaining the character of its existing architecture.
Designed by RW Creative, with interiors and landscape architecture by Two Julius and construction by Purcell Homes, the project began with the materials and forms already present in the house. For Two Julius, Palm Beach House was also a personal project, giving the studio an opportunity to explore its own approach to renovating older homes without stripping away what made them distinctive.
‘It was important for us to not only restore and renovate this 1970s beach house, but to preserve its original character and not erase it. Too often on the Gold Coast, beautiful original homes are knocked down and replaced with soulless McMansions. Once those houses are gone, they are gone forever,’ says Two Julius.
Inside, the palette draws directly from the period. Cork flooring brings warmth and texture underfoot, while ceramic door knobs and a tiled bench introduce smaller details connected to the home’s 1970s character.
A handcrafted hit-and-miss brick wall adds pattern and depth, while a porthole skylight brings natural light into the interior and introduces another playful element.
Two Julius selected finishes that sit naturally alongside the existing architecture. Cork, ceramic, brick and tile bring texture and warmth while keeping the new elements connected to the house’s 1970s character.
The 1970s influence continues through the ceramic door knobs, tiled bench, porthole skylight and brickwork, each reinforcing the character of the original house.
Outside, the landscape continues the same approach. A kidney-shaped pool brings a familiar 1970s form into the garden, while the surrounding planting connects the exterior back to the architecture and coastal setting.
Palm Beach House stays close to the language of the existing home, with its history carried through the interiors, materials and landscape.
