‘I love to adorn my walls with art and my floors are no exception. I like to keep my decorative style quite textural and neutral and allow the art, on the floor and walls, to be the hero,’ says Sophie Nolan. Photo: Hande Renshaw

As a ceramic artist, Sophie Nolan has an innate eye for design, continually observing shape and form, and how the design elements relate around her. In her own home in Sydney’s Northern Beaches, which she shares with her husband, three daughters and family dog, Sophie applies the same design sense to her interior style.

‘I love to adorn my walls with art and my floors are no exception. I like to keep my decorative style quite textural and neutral and allow the art, on the floor and walls, to be the hero,’ shares Sophie.

Double’s latest Square rug collection is a collection of playfully modern inspired designs, which work perfectly in spaces where the backdrop is muted - the square size ideal for spaces where you need to add a touch of texture and colour.

‘A rug can pull the whole room together and become an artwork for the floor. I love wooden floors under carpet – rugs add warmth to my home.’

Working from a home studio, Sophie is often covered in clay, making practicality important in her home – Double’s machine washable rugs have been the perfect solution.

‘A washable rug is incredible. We have a dog who brings in dirt and not to mention my clay covered feet from the studio. One of my daughters is asthmatic, so a dust free space is high on our radar.’

Double’s brand name alludes to its innovative patent. Each rug comes with two layers, the base and a top layer that can be peeled off and cleaned in the washing machine time and time again. All the fun things in life – sandy feet, red wine, energetic pets, messy sleepovers – are no trouble for its stain-resistant, washable technology.

Double rugs remain beautiful and softly tactile underfoot while all the best memories and life milestones are made. ‘I like a rug to be soft underfoot, as it adds an element of comfort and luxury to a room. I’m drawn to rugs that are unique and add a layer of interest that enhances the room.’

The Square collection comes in playful designs, inspired by mid-century and modern Australian style: the Echo Brown Cotton Feel Rug, features an abstracted design of geometric shapes in a sienna brown over a white background, the Willow Highland Rug, features a textural pattern over a solid background colour in a range of tones, from monochromatic blacks and whites to earthy green and vibrant blue and the Peace Vegan Shearling Rug, features a textural pattern over a solid background colour in a range of tones, from monochromatic cream and black to mossy green and vibrant red. Perfectly simple, in non-shed vegan shearling inspired by soft Australian wool. The entire Double range is machine washable and stain resistant – ideal for homes made for living.
