Sydney Ceramics Market returns this October for its fourth edition, taking over Carriageworks for a two-day celebration devoted to clay and the people who shape it.
More than 130 makers from across NSW and the ACT will gather under the vaulted industrial bays, turning the precinct into a live atlas of Australian ceramics—work that ranges from statement sculpture by emerging artists to finely honed tableware shaped by decades at the wheel.
Created by friends Melody Brunton, from Emi Ceramics, and photographer and content producer, Samee Lapham, the event grew from a shared vision to champion the ingenuity and diversity within Sydney’s ceramic community and make it visible at scale. ‘We met through a market event ourselves and shared a vision to uplift, educate and create community around the medium of clay,’ shares Melody.
‘It’s about uplifting the makers behind the work we admire and inviting more people to discover the beauty of handmade ceramic pieces, says Samee. In just four years, that ethos has evolved into the largest local dedicated ceramics event and a fixture of Sydney Craft Week.
Far from a conventional market, Sydney Ceramics Market is where ceramics enthusiasts, collectors and the simply curious come to discover, compare, and meet the makers behind the work. The 2025 lineup brings together familiar and new names—Milly Dent, Simon Reece, Studio Elke, Sooty Ceramics, Everything Flows Studio, Trade The Mark, Vanessa Bean, All Day Clay and Bernadette Huang among them—framed by a curated exhibition at the entrance showcasing 30 emerging Sydney ceramic artists.
Throughout the weekend, making is not just on display; it’s in motion. Clay Sydney stages live wheel-throwing demonstrations; Juz Kitson from The ArtHouse Milton introduces her Porcelain Queen clay and artisan brushware range; and those ready to deepen their practice can source specialist tools from Meet Ceramics, and local engineers Homespun. It’s a pathway from looking to learning—an invitation to take a technique home.
‘So much of ceramics happens behind the scenes, and it’s nice to reveal some of that process and encourage conversations around that in our event setting. All the beautiful ceramic work you see is only the final step in a very labour-intensive journey!’ says Samee.
What Sydney Ceramics Market captures best is proximity—to process, people, and to the subtleties that set one vessel apart from another. You can talk slips and firing cycles, feel the balance of a handle, and drift between the sculptural and the everyday; that closeness keeps the work legible, whether you’re investing in a centrepiece or choosing the mug you’ll reach for each morning—the maker is right there.
‘In many ways we’re trying to straddle the line between the more exclusive art world and the accessibility of a front-facing market stall. By dissolving those walls, we hope to create space for the Australian clay community to rise together, and to spark conversations about how artists can realistically build sustainable, well-rounded practices that support their lives and allow them to do more of what they’re called to do,’ says Melody.
This year’s edition underscores clay’s endless possibilities with a mix of discipline, risk and play. It’s a snapshot of where Australian ceramics is headed, and a reminder of why handmade objects still matter: they carry time, touch and intention.
‘We want Sydney Ceramics Market to leave you feeling inspired: seeing such a breadth of possibility in one space creates a deeper appreciation for the craft of ceramics,’ Samee adds.
Sydney Ceramics Market 2025 will take place Saturday 18th and Sunday 19th October 2025 at Carriageworks in Eveleigh on Gadigal Land.
Tickets are available for purchase online here —with a discounted two-day entry option online only— or at the door all weekend, with kids under 13 free.
